Changes in Plant Species Composition Within a Planted Forest in a Deciduous Agroecosystem in Ghana

Background

Early-successional tree plantations can promote regeneration of second-growth mixed-species forests. While non-native species have been studied for their role in enabling second-growth regeneration, this study surveys understories of plantations of trees native to Ghana in a post-maize site to explore the suitability of native trees for promoting second-growth regeneration.

Climate change mitigation through afforestation/reforestation: A global analysis of hydrologic impacts with four case studies

Background

While much attention is being given internationally to the opportunities for carbon sequestration to mitigate climate change, little attention is being paid to the environmental tradeoffs that are associated with these types of schemes. This study examines the implicit hydrologic dimensions of international efforts to mitigate climate change, specifically potential impacts of the Clean Development Mechanism-Afforestation/Reforestation (CDM-AR) provisions of the Kyoto Protocol (KP) on global, regional and local water cycles.

Financial, Economic and Environmental Profitability of Reforestation of Imperata Grasslands in Indonesia

background

This study assesses the profitability of roundwood production in forest plantations established on Imperata grasslands in South Kalimantan, Indonesia.

Research Goals & Methods

This study uses the discounted cash flow method on the Riam Kiwa reforestation trial area. It also explores the importance of fiscal incentives to financial profitability of roundwood production in forest plantations established on Imperata grasslands.

Profiles of Carbon Stocks in Forest, Reforestation and Agricultural Land, Northern Thailand

background

This study assesses carbon stocks in various forms and land-use types in the Nam Yao sub-watershed, Thailand, to estimate the impact of land use on carbon stocks.

Research Goals & Methods

The carbon stocks of aboveground, soil organic, and fine root within primary forest, reforestation and agricultural land were estimated through field data collection.

Regeneration of Indigenous Trees in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Uganda

background

This study examines the dominant exotic species, their distribution and effect on the regeneration of indigenous tree species in the formerly encroached area of Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, southwestern Uganda. The 4 habitat types examined were exotic woodlots, old croplands and natural forest habitat.

Research Goals & Methods

Indigenous species diversity was assessed by systematic sampling of the vegetation and soils in transect plots.

Is There a Forest Transition? Deforestation, Reforestation, and Development

Background

This paper explores the relationship between economic development and forest transitions, both deforestation and forest regrowth.

research goals & methods

This paper performs a regression analysis on three variables gleaned from multi-national historical statistics between 1922 and 1990: forest cover, rural-urban population distribution, and population growth.

Does Forest Restoration using Taungya Foster Tree Species Diversity? The case of Afram Headwaters Forest Reserve in Ghana

background

This study evaluates taungya agroforestry system - a forest restoration effectiveness in promoting high tree diversity-  in Ghana. This study was conducted in a forest reserve buffered by Teak and Cedrella-taungya on logged, cropped and burned land.

Can Legality Verification Rescue Global Forest Governance? Analyzing the Potential of Public and Private Policy Intersection to Ameliorate Forest Challenges in Southeast Asia

background

This review paper looks at the emergence of legality verification of forest timber products and its usefulness in addressing forest degradation. Legality verification, in the context of timber imports as discussed in this paper, is the process of supply chain tracking to ensure that all timber is legally harvested.

Impact of Exotic Plantations and Harvesting Methods on the Regeneration of Indigenous Tree Species in Kibale Forest, Uganda

background

In the late 1960s and early 1970s, exotic tree plantations were established in hilltop grassland sites of the Kibale Forest Reserve. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, many of these sites were selected for logging to encourage growth of native trees.

Research Goals & Methods

This study assesses the impact of both pitsawing and sawmilling of exotic species plantations on the colonization and regeneration of indigenous species. Tree enumeration was conducted within plots representing the different plantation types and harvesting methods in order to determine indigenous species richness and diversity.
