How Successful is Tree growing for Smallholders in the Amazon?backgroundThis study compares donor-driven and smallholder-initiated tree growing projects in the Amazon to assess outcomes such as tree survival, commercialization success, and environmental benefits of two different approaches to tree planting. Such research is important for understanding the limitations of both smallholder and donor-driven tree growing for reforestation, and for improving production of forest products outside of natural forests. The study also emphasizes the importance of capturing local knowledge. Open access copy available |

Effects of Different Light Levels on the Initial Growth and Photosynthesis of Croton urucurana Baill. in Southeastern BrazilbackgroundThis study measures the effect of different levels of shading on growth, chlorophyll concentration, and photosynthetic rate of Croton urucurana, a pioneer species potentially important in reforestation efforts in riparian forests of Brazil. Research Goals & MethodsThe authors tested seedlings at 0% shade (full sunlight), 30% shade, 50% shade, and 70% shade. Open access copy available |

Fire in the Seasonal Semideciduous Forest: Impact and Regeneration at Forest EdgesbackgroundThis study looks at a fragment of semi-deciduous forest in Brazil to determine the effects of fire on vegetation at varying distances from the fragment’s edge, as well as the recovery of forest structure and species diversity after fire. Seed development, yield and quality of two palm species growing in different tropical forest types in SE Brazil: implications for ecological restorationBackgroundNatural forest remnants have been set as seed production fields to supply seeds of native tree species for tropical forest restoration, but the effect of different forest types on seed production has not been accessed to date for palm species. This study reports on seed development, yield, and quality of two palm species in different tropical forest types in SE Brazil. Open access copy available |
What Role Should Government Regulation Play in Ecological Restoration? Ongoing Debate in São Paulo State, BrazilbackgroundThis article addresses the degree of detail that should be present in legislation dealing with reforestation and restoration, and if there is a relationship between technical content/scope of regulation and success of projects. The relationship between law and reforestation is also discussed. In São Paulo state, legislation establishes precise reforestation requirements, such as the use of a minimum of 80 species of native trees and the presence of specific proportions of functional groups. This is the only existing legislation known by the authors with this degree of technical detail. Open access copy available |
Growth of Euterpe edulis under forest and agroforestry in southern BrazilBackgroundThe shade-tolerant palm Euterpe edulis is prevalent in native forests and in reforestation of banana plantations in Brazil. However, there are no data comparing its plantation growth performance to its native forest growth. This study evaluates growth and mortality of E. edulis planted in secondary dense forest and in banana plantations, as well as their relationships with site variables.
