Tropical Forest Transitions and Globalization: Neo-Liberalism, Migration, Tourism, and International Conservation Agendas

Background

Deforestation is giving way to forest regeneration in some tropical regions. This paper uses two case studies to investigate such ‘forest transitions’ in two biodiversity-rich countries, Costa Rica and Madagascar.

Does Forest Restoration using Taungya Foster Tree Species Diversity? The case of Afram Headwaters Forest Reserve in Ghana

background

This study evaluates taungya agroforestry system - a forest restoration effectiveness in promoting high tree diversity-  in Ghana. This study was conducted in a forest reserve buffered by Teak and Cedrella-taungya on logged, cropped and burned land.

Status of Indigenous Tree Species Regeneration under Exotic Plantations in Belete Forest, South West Ethiopia

background

This study assesses the diversity and density of naturally regenerated woody species under the canopies of exotic plantations adjacent to natural forests in a moist montane forest type in Southwest Ethiopia.

Forest Restoration in Abandoned Agricultural Land: a Case Study from East Africa

background

This study quantifies the pattern of forest recovery following clearing and 3 years of cultivation of an abandoned agricultural land adjacent to a 300ha relatively undisturbed natural forest in a moist-evergreen forest in Kibale National Park, Uganda.

Does Weeding Promote Regeneration of an Indigenous Tree Community in Felled Pine Plantations in Uganda

background

This study evaluates a management scheme to cut vines, grasses, and shrubs to promote regeneration of indigenous trees subsequent to removal of plantation softwoods over a period of 3 years in Kibale National Park, Uganda.

Tree regeneration in church forests of Ethiopia: effects of microsites and management

Background

Tree regeneration is severely hampered in the fragmented afromontane forests of northern Ethiopia. Pressures of harvesting and grazing and climactic conditions present challenges to regeneration. This study explores how trees regenerate in remnant forests along the gradient from open field, forest edge to closed sites and canopy gaps inside the forest.

Changes in Plant Species Composition Within a Planted Forest in a Deciduous Agroecosystem in Ghana

Background

Early-successional tree plantations can promote regeneration of second-growth mixed-species forests. While non-native species have been studied for their role in enabling second-growth regeneration, this study surveys understories of plantations of trees native to Ghana in a post-maize site to explore the suitability of native trees for promoting second-growth regeneration.

Effects of Ground Preparation and Microenvironment on Germination and Natural Regeneration of Juniperus procera and Afrocarpus gracilior in Ethiopia

Background

This study assesses the net effect of seed supply and seedbed changes on germination and natural regeneration of J. procera and A. gracilior in the Afromontane forests of Ethiopia.

Occurrence of Nodulation in Unexplored Leguminous Trees Native to the West African Tropical Rainforest and Inoculation Response of Native Species useful in Reforestation

Background

Few studies examine the ability of leguminous tree species to nodulate and fix atmospheric N, especially symbiotically with rhizobia; this study seeks to fill that research gap.  The occurrence of nodulation was determined in 156 mature leguminous species growing in 6 natural forest areas in south-eastern Guinea and an in situ experiment of rhizobia inoculation was performed on 8 selected tree species.

Rehabilitation of Forest-Savannas in Ghana: The Impacts of Land Use, Shade, and Invasive Species on Tree Recruitment

background

This study investigates the varying potential of soil seed banks of predominant agricultural land uses for the recruitment of trees from seeds and seedlings in 3 farming communities in a forest-savanna ecological zone in Ghana.

Native Woody Species Regeneration in Exotic Tree Plantations at Munessa-Shashemene Forest, Southern Ethiopia

background

This study investigates native woody species regeneration in 4 exotic species monoculture plantations in Munessa-Shashemene Forest Project Area in southern Ethiopia. The plantation ages ranged from 9 to 28 years.

Survival and Growth of Seedlings of 19 Native Tree and Shrub Species Planted in Degraded Forest as Part of a Forest Restoration Project in Madagascar's Highlands

background

This study compares the survival rates of 19 native tree and shrub species grown in a forest restoration project in Madagascar’s highlands. The study results are used to compare the survival of relatively short seedlings compared to relatively tall seedlings for all species combined in order to test the importance of seedling size for restoration.

Effect of Taungya on Regeneration of Endemic Forest Tree Species in Nigeria: Edo State Nigeria as a Case Study

background

This study aims to investigate the number of native species that can regenerate under natural conditions in a 3-year Taungya system in Edo State, Nigeria. Taungya is an agroforestry system that combines forestry practices with agriculture and agriculture-related activities.

Floristic Composition, Structure and Natural Regeneration in a Moist Semi-Deciduous Forest following Anthropogenic Disturbances and Plant Invasion

background

This study examines the floristic composition, structure and natural regeneration in three forest types: disturbed forest (DF), undisturbed forest (UF), and disturbed-invaded forest (DIF) in Tinte Bepo forest reserve in Ghana.
