Background
Deforestation has been a signficant issue in Cambodia since the 1970s due to agricultural expansion and unstable political eras. This has caused severe flooding or drought downstream, environmental degradation and loss of biodiversity. Relatively recently, there has been an increasingly call to promote restoration and conservation of environment and sustainable use and management of natural resources.
Goals & Approach
The objectives of this program are to enhance sustainable use of natural resources, to create harmony between people and nature, and to increase local awareness on environmental conservation with providing incentives to local people in Cambodia. This is achieved through researching effective approaches and promoting related aspects of socio-ecological production landscapes. The promotion aspect will primarily be done through workshops and seminars local communities, elementary schools and local government.
Reported Takeaways
The program has yet to start but they expect that through their workshops and seminars local community members will gain a deeper understanding of natural resource management and the increasing need to conserve nature.
