Institutional Design of Forest Landscape Restoration in Central Togo: Informing Policy-making through Q Methodology Analysis
BACKGROUND:
Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) in Central Togo is a critical initiative for addressing extensive land degradation exacerbated by inadequate forest management and unsustainable farming. The study applies Q Methodology to analyze the perceptions of various stakeholders, including local communities, non-governmental organizations, and policymakers, to better understand their views on FLR strategies. By exploring these diverse perspectives, the authors identify common ground and differences, providing crucial insights for developing restoration policies that are not only effective but also embraced by all stakeholders, thus enhancing the potential for sustainable and successful FLR implementation in the region.
GOALS AND METHODS:
The paper aims to assess and integrate local stakeholder perceptions into the design and implementation of FLR in Central Togo, with the objective of crafting effective and inclusive restoration policies. The authors employ Q Methodology, a semi-quantitative technique that captures the subjective viewpoints of various stakeholders including local communities, NGOs, and policymakers. Through analyzing these perspectives, the study seeks to identify consensus and divergent views that can guide the development of tailored, sustainable FLR strategies.
CONCLUSION AND TAKEAWAYS:
The study concludes that understanding and integrating diverse stakeholder perceptions is crucial for the success of FLR initiatives in Central Togo. It reveals that while there is significant agreement on the importance of biodiversity conservation and the necessity of including economic incentives in FLR efforts, there are also clear divergences regarding the roles of various governance structures and the extent of community involvement required. The findings underscore the need for adaptive, context-specific policies that accommodate the complex socio-economic and environmental dynamics of the region, fostering broader stakeholder engagement and sustainability in restoration efforts.
