Antecedentes

Los manglares brindan servicios ambientales importantes incluyendo la protección de costas contra el oleaje, la provisión de hábitat para especies marinas y el establecimiento de áreas de recreación turística. Sin embargo, los manglares alrededor del mundo se ven amenazados por el desarrollo de costas. En las islas Galápagos, la acumulación de residuos sólidos en las raíces de los manglares y la construcción de hoteles, viviendas, puertos y malecones, constituyen las fuentes principales de presión sobre estos ecosistemas.

Amazon Reforestation Project

BACKGROUND

This resource presents the mission of the Amazon Reforestation Project (ARP) which aims to conserve tropical rainforest and conduct forest restoration on deforested lands in the Brazilian Amazon. Located on over 1 million hectares of land in the state of Amazonas, this project aims to serve as an example for large scale conservation and restoration in this region, where increasing development and globalization of Manaus is leading to increased opportunities and incentives for deforestation.

CO2OL Biodiversity Reforestation, Vietnam

BACKGROUND

CO2OL Biodiversity Reforestation is the reforestation of former fallow land or excessively used grasslands in  an area of state-owned forest in Kon Tum Province, Vietnam. Reforestation is achieved through the planting of native trees financed through the sale of carbon credits. The area is characterised by high biodiversity.  Reforestation aims to recover and sustain the provision of vital ecosystem goods and services and also provide employment for local communities.
