The Enhanced Forest Inventory and Analysis Program—National Sampling Design and Estimation Procedures

The Enhanced Forest Inventory and Analysis Program—National Sampling Design and Estimation Procedures

background

This report explains the changes in approach used in the Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) Program of the United States Department of Agriculture Forest Service. The FIA Program was designed to standardize national practices among regional FIA programs.

Conclusions & Takeaways

Stratification and plot design for the program are discussed at length, including specific information about tree attributes measured in the field and special situations that influence data collection and processing. Information is also included on statistical estimation and sampling techniques for plots containing multiple land uses or straddling the boundaries of different ecosystems.
