Facilitation of Forest Landscape Restoration on Abandoned Swidden Fallows in Laos using Mixed-Species Planting and Biochar Application

background

This article aims to assess the feasibility of a plantation with eight mixed native species fertilized with rice husk biochar as a technique for soil amendment at a specific site in Laos.

Research Goals & Methods

The use of biochar was compared to inorganic (NPK) fertilizer and to no fertilization. The effects on the planted seedlings establishment and growth were monitored for four years.

Putting Participatory Domestication into Practice in West and Central Africa

backgroud

This article reviews the process of participatory community tree domestication in central Africa.

Research Goals & Methods

In case studies examined, nurseries were planned in coordination between the International Center for Agroforestry Research and local communities, and the two groups divided the funding and supply of nursery materials. No salaries were paid to the farmers working in the nursery. ICRAF staff trained community members in propagation techniques.

Feasibility of Farmer-Managed Vegetative Propagation Nurseries in Cameroon

background

This article reviews farmer-managed vegetative propagation nurseries in Cameroon. The authors summarize the division of costs required to establish and operate the nurseries.

Research Goals & Methods

Cuttings of Dacryodes edulis, Irvingia gabonensis and Ricinodendron heudelotti were studied. All had successful rates of propagation by cutting, but only Dacryodes edulis had success with air layering.

Modelling the Effect of Forest Cover on Shallow Landslides at the River Basin Scale

background

This study analyzes soil models that can be used to help predict soil erosion which are useful to prioritize reforestation areas of watersheds.

Research Goals & Methods

The researchers tested the models in a river basin in Ecuador. They collected data for soil moisture/matric potential, depth, and rainfall. Vegetation (overland flow resistance coefficient) and root cohesion data were derived from the literature, as was the evapotranspiration rate.
