Reforestation, coffee and carbon in Sierra Piura, Peru: can carbon financing promote sustainable agriculture?BackgroundPrevious research has suggested that certain agricultural practices can protect, enhance, and reverse environmental degradation. One way to achieve this beneficial connection can be encouraged is through financial mechanisms, such as payment for ecosystem services. This document examines a similar approach in which carbon revenues drive sustainable coffee agriculture in the Sierra Piura region of Peru. Open access copy available |

Reforestation of Abandoned Pastures: Silvicultural Means to Accelerate Forest Recovery and BiodiversityBackgroundDespite the 2736 native tree species in Ecuador, the majority of forestation activities in the country are based on exotic pines and eucalypts. In this book chapter, the authors describe the reason for this neglect being the lack of knowledge on the ecology and silvicultural treatment and the lack of nurseries growing these species. Especies para reforestación en Nicaragua (Species for Reforestation in Nicaragua)BackgroundThis manual provides information about multipurpose trees in Nicaragua. Available with subscription or purchase |
Regeneration Pattern and Size-Class Distribution of Indigenous Woody Species in Exotic Plantation in Pugu Forest Reserve, TanzaniabackgroundThis study examines the natural regeneration of indigenous tree species in an exotic tree plantation adjacent to a natural forest in a coastal forest of Tanzania. Research Goals & MethodsFour dominant indigenous tree species were identified in the exotic plantation with diameter size classes between 10 to 35cm. Open access copy available |
Native Tree Species Regeneration and Diversity in the Mountain Cloud Forests of East AfricabackgroundThis study evaluates the diversity of native species regeneration within 3 native and exotic forest plantations of the indigenous forests of Tatia Hills, East Africa. Open access copy available |
Exotic Trees as Nurse-Trees for the Regeneration of Natural Tropical ForestsBackgroundThis article challenges widely-held views that the presence of exotic tree plantations in the tropics harm the environment. Through collecting evidence from experiences in tropical countries, the authors argue that exotic tree canopies exert protective functions - a nurse effect - for the regeneration of natural forest. Native Forest Regeneration in Pine and Eucalypt Plantations in Northern Province, South AfricabackgroundThis study assesses understory colonization by indigenous plant species in exotic tree plantations established on grasslands growing adjacent to native mixed evergreen forest in Northern Province, South Africa. Available with subscription or purchase |
Status of Indigenous Tree Species Regeneration under Exotic Plantations in Belete Forest, South West EthiopiabackgroundThis study assesses the diversity and density of naturally regenerated woody species under the canopies of exotic plantations adjacent to natural forests in a moist montane forest type in Southwest Ethiopia. Does Weeding Promote Regeneration of an Indigenous Tree Community in Felled Pine Plantations in UgandabackgroundThis study evaluates a management scheme to cut vines, grasses, and shrubs to promote regeneration of indigenous trees subsequent to removal of plantation softwoods over a period of 3 years in Kibale National Park, Uganda. Available with subscription or purchase |
Native Woody Species Regeneration in Exotic Tree Plantations at Munessa-Shashemene Forest, Southern EthiopiabackgroundThis study investigates native woody species regeneration in 4 exotic species monoculture plantations in Munessa-Shashemene Forest Project Area in southern Ethiopia. The plantation ages ranged from 9 to 28 years. Available with subscription or purchase |
Analysis of the "Shelter Tree-Effect” of Natural and Exotic Forest Canopies on the Growth of Young Podocarpus falcatus Trees in Southern EthiopiabackgroundAvailable with subscription or purchase |
Consequences of plantation harvest during tropical forest restoration in UgandaBackgroundOpen access copy available |
Effects of Canopy Cover and Understory Environment of Tree Plantations on Richness, Density and Size of Colonizing Woody Species in Southern EthiopiabackgroundThis study investigates the effects of canopy characteristics and associated understory environmental factors of tree plantations on native woody species colonization in two broadleaved and two coniferous plantations in southern Ethiopia. The plantation forests investigated are surrounded by dry Afromontane natural forest. Available with subscription or purchase |
Expediting Reforestation in Tropical Forests Grasslands: Distance and Isolation from Seed Sources in PlantationsbackgroundThis study investigates the potential use of tree plantations to facilitate regeneration of indigenous trees in successionally arrested grassland. It focuses on how characteristics of the plantations and native species can determine the type of regeneration occurring in Kibale National Park, Uganda. Open access copy available |
Diversity of Naturally-Regenerated Native Woody Species in Forest Plantations in the Ethiopian HighlandsbackgroundThis paper examines woody species diversity and understory vegetation of naturally regenerated native tree and shrub species in 4-plantation forests and adjacent natural forests in Wono Genet in Ethiopia. Tree species effects on soil properties in experimental plantations in tropical moist forestBackgroundForest soil properties are influenced by the complex interactions of vegetation, soil type, geology, management, and climactic patterns. Tree species can differ in their long-term effects on soils. This study resamples one of the earliest replicated experimental sites at La Selva Biological Station, Costa Rica, used to examine the effects of native tropical tree species on soil properties, to examine longer term effects on soil properties. Open access copy available |
