Hojancha, Guanacaste (Restoration of vegetation cover in Monte Alto, Costa Rica).

The authors conducted a study on the succession process in pasture areas under primary forest recovery in the upper basin of the Rio Nosara, Hojancha canton, province of Guanacaste.

Four types of successional stages were identified: recovering pasture, forest pioneer, secondary forest and The authors conducted a study on the succession process in pasture areas in primary forest recovery in the upper basin of the Rio Nosara, Hojancha canton, province of Guanacaste.

We identified four types of successional stages: recovering pasture, forest pioneer, secondary forest and intervened primary forest. These areas were located in two life zones: tropical rain forest and premontane wet forest.

In each successional stage horizontal structure was characterized by four parameters: richness and diversity, vegetation cover, floristic structure and distribution of trees by diameter class and basal areas.

According to the species-area curve, the secondary forest is the one that had the highest number of species and the primary forest was the most diverse.

As for the similarity index, the successional stages that had the highest number of species in common were the pioneer forest and secondary forest.

In terms of basal area and number of trees per hectare it was observed that as the process of succession progresses, the number of trees per hectare and basal area increases.

The authors conclude that, according to the results of the estimation of carbon stocks, the amount of carbon present in the forest reserve areas under restoration are within the ranges found for tropical moist forests of and grassland areas.
