An Ethnographic Study of Tree-Planting Successes and Failures by Small Farmers in ParaguaybackgroundThis thesis outlines the characteristics of farmers that successfully implement forestry projects in eastern Paraguay. The work begins by providing background information on the geographical, political, and social aspects of Paraguay and the focal community, as well as a summary of the literature on agroforestry. Applied Nucleation as a Forest Restoration StrategybackgroundTo combat deforestation and restore forest cover quickly and efficiently, this article proposes the use of applied nucleation as a restoration strategy. The article reviews research to date on applied nucleation, which is a method for restoring degraded landscapes in which small clusters of shrubs and trees are planted to encourage natural forest regeneration. Restoration of a Coastal Swamp Forest in Southeast BrazilbackgroundThis study evaluates the potential for nine native tree and shrub species for use in the revegetation of degraded swamps in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Research Goals & MethodsInvasive grasses and other vegetation, including the exotic tree Casuarina equisetifolia were removed from the site. Available with subscription or purchase |
Growth of dipterocarp seedlings in artificial gaps: An experiment in a logged-over rainforest in South Kalimantan, IndonesiaBackgroundRegeneration of dipterocarps following logging has become a crucial issue in tropical forest management. Secondary forest frequently and rapidly replaces dipterocarps in large logged-over patches. If unmanaged, these secondary forest patches are often composed of unmerchantable early-succession species. It has been hypothesized that dipterocarps grow most successfully in small gaps. Available with subscription or purchase |
Enrichment Planting of Bertholletia excelsa in Secondary Forest in the Bolivian Amazon: Effect of Cutting Line Width on Survival, Growth and Crown TraitsbackgroundBertholletia excelsa (Brazil nut tree) seedlings were planted as enrichment plantings under a variety of different treatments in the El Tigre reserve in the northern Bolivian Amazon.
Tree density, basal area and species diversity in a disturbed dry tropicalforest of northern India: implications for conservationBackgroundDry tropical forest communities are among the world’s most threatened systems. Rapid measures are required to protect and restore them in degraded landscapes. For planning conservation strategies, there is a need to determine the essential measurable properties, such as number of species and basal area, that best describe the dry forest vegetation and its environment, and to document quantitative relationships among them. Banco de Sementes como Indicador de Restauração de uma Área Degradada por Mineração de Caulim em Brás Pires, MGThe authors germinated the seed bank from degraded former kaolin mining sites that have regenerated naturally for a period of 20 years. They used two light treatments usedfor the germination: one with 11.5% shade, and another with 60%. There was a wide range of variation among the species according to the light level, with some species producing far more seedlings under one treatment that the other. Most (2/3) of the species germinating (total n: 36) were herbaceous, with eight tree species (see above). Open access copy available |
High Seedling Recruitment of indigenous Tree Species in Forest Plantations in Kakamega Forest, Western KenyabackgroundThe study evaluates the potential for seedling recruitment of indigenous tree species in different types of plantations and secondary forest in western Kenya. The plantations are comprised of mixtures and monocultures of single or exotic indigenous tree species. Available with subscription or purchase |
Regeneration Response of Juniperus procera and Olea europera subsp cuspidata to Exclosure in a Dry Afromontane Forest in Northern EthiopiabackgroundThis study investigates the natural regeneration of Juniperus procera and Olea europeaea subsp. cuspidata after 3 years under protection from livestock, human interference, and under open management systems in a dry Afromontane forest in northern Ethiopia.
