Forest in the Air Project

Background

As a joint venture by Conservation International and Daikin, the Forest in the Air Project works in Gunung Gede Pangrango National Park in Indonesia. The forest is not only home to a variety of flora and fauna but also provides critical ecosystem services. Like other forests in Indonesia, the park is under threat from agriculture and other human activities, such as illegal logging. 

Goals & Approach

The goal of the project is improve both the ecological and socio-economic conditions of the Gunung Gede Pangrango National Park region. The program aims to build a 'green wall' of over 300 hectares of trees and plants through community reforestation that will protect the national park while also providing direct economic benefits to local communities. 

Reported Takeaways

By October 2018,  almost 10 years after the start of the program, 95% of trees planted, between 114,000 to 120,000,  had survived and were in good condition. 40 community members were reported to have been involved in the planting process and
