Semeando Sustentabilidade em Apuí (Seedling Sustainability in Apuí)

The project aims to strengthen environmental management in Apuí, and to increase capacity for the development of more sustainable productive activities. To achieve this goal the project works simultaneously on reinforcing the network of seeds and seedling production, strengthening institutions, supporting planting and forest conservation, building capacity of landholders in rural properties, and providing environmental education and assistance for the creation of a development plan for the municipality.

Reserva Encenillo, Fundacion Natura, Colombia

This reserve is located in high montane forest of the Colombia Andes, designed to protect the locally important forest tree Weinmanniatomentosa (Encenillo in Spanish). The total size of the reserve is 135 ha of forest, and serves as a forest corridor in a matrix of pasture, potato, and remnant forest landscape.

Laguna Pedro Palo - Reserva Tenasuca, Colombia

This project is located in a community reserve outside of Bogota, Colombia, in montane Andean oak forest. Plantings are performed by members of the reserve association, which includes a small NGO and local landowners.

2-3 hectares were planted around a lake in 1998, these plantings were predominantly Andean oak (Quercus humboltii), this forest area reached canopy closure in 2010-2013. Reserve managers believe that this oak buffer area helps to maintain a constant water level of the lake, by recharging a continuous supply of groundwater throughout the year.

The Jose Celestino Mutis Botanic Garden of Bogota works with the Municipal government of Bogota in order to restore and rehabilitate various areas of forest habitat around the city of Bogota.

Ecosystem Restoration of Riparian Forests in Sao Paulo Project

Background

Since the 1970s, the Sao Paulo region of Brazil has experienced extensive expansion of the agro-industry, reducing native vegetation coverage, increasing strain on natural resources, and contributing to land degredation. The Ecosystem Restoration of Riparian Forests in Sao Paulo Project was created in 2005 and ran until 2011 to correct these trends.

Background

The National Forest Plan 2018 was developed in conjunction with the Guyana National Forest Policy Statement with technical and stakeholder input. The Forest Plan describes the implementation steps for the Forest Policy, which will be carried out by the Guyana Forest Committee.

Mitigation of Climate Change through Sustainable Forest Management and Capacity Building in the Southern States of Mexico

Background

In 2007/8 the Government of Mexican and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) developed a proposal for a forestry value chain project. The Community-based Forestry Development Project in the Southern States of Campeche, Chiapas, and Oaxaca, otherwise known as DECOFOS, was the project that emerged from this proposal.

Face the Future: Ecuador

Background

Due to high population levels and a constant reliance on natural resources for livelihoods, the Andes region in Ecuador has lost an estimated +90% of its primary forest. Since 1993, Face the Future and the Ecuadorian Ministry of the Environment have worked together to reforest this region.

La degradación ambiental y la pérdida de biodiversidad ponen en riesgo los medios de vida de habitantes de países andinos  tropicales. Respondiendo a esta amenaza, Colombia, Ecuador, Perú y Bolivia han definido metas cuantitativas de restauración ecológica y consecuentemente formulado programas para alcanzar estas metas. No obstante, esto ha presentado retos de distintas magnitudes variando de país en país.

Recuperación de la salud del suelo para la restauración de áreas degradadas por la minería aurífera aluvial en la Amazonía peruana

La extracción de oro en los ríos de la Amazonía peruana ha provocado la aparición de áreas degradadas caracterizadas por la deforestación, baja fertilidad, contaminacion con mercurio, escasa vida microbiana y ausencia de flora y fauna.  Este documento resume el proceso de recuperacion del suelo liderado por el IIAP, que busca restaurar la salud de los suelos utilizando leguminosas, promoviendo la reactivación ecosistémica y productiva de los bosques.

Técnicas de cosecha y manejo postcosecha de frutos de aguaje

La depredación Indiscriminada de la que vienen siendo objeto las plantaciones naturales de aguaje, por las prácticas de extracción (tumbado de palmeras) que se utilizan para cosechar los frutos, está trayendo como consecuencia la disminución de la población femenina de esta especie y probablemente, la de algunos ecotipos o variedades. Estas practicas atentan contra la regeneración natural de la especie y hoy en dia es cada vez mas dificil encontrar estas plantaciones cerca de los centros poblados.

Manual práctico: biofertilización y bioprotección de cafe (Coffea arabica) con aplicación de hongos micorrízicos arbusculares

El desarrollo de tecnología sobre la biofertilización en plantas clonales micorrizadas de café podría constituir un sistema más eficiente para el incremento de los rendimientos por hectárea, control de plagas y enfermedades.  Este sistema emplea tecnologías limpias para el medio ambiente, mejorando la fertilidad de los suelos, buscando reducir los costos de producción y mejorar los niveles productivos de las fincas cafetaleras.
