Carbon Neutral: Uchindile Mapanda, Tanzania
Background
As part of BP's Target Neutral program, this project is addressing grasslands that have been classified as degraded by establishing commercial forests at Uchindile and Mapanda districts in the Tanzanian Southern Highlands.
Goals & Approach
The goal of this project is to reduce carbon dioxide emissions through the creation of 'carbon sinks'. This is done through planting commercial forests with a range of exotic and indigenous tree species plus local fruit crops in order to improve species diversity, ensuring the forests’ health and resilience. Locals then use sustainable harvesting to gain the economic benefits from these forests.
