Growth characteristics of some native tree species used in silvopastoral systems in the humid lowlands of Costa Rica

Background

Degraded pastures established throughout Central America in the latter 20th C are gradually transitioning to silvopasture or secondary forest. Understanding growth characteristics of trees on these lands is important for proper management.

Evaluation of Reforestation Potential of 83 Tree Species Planted on Imperata cylindrica Dominated Grassland – A case Study from South Kalimantan, Indonesia

background

In this study, 83 tree species (native and exotic) were tested for their growth and survival in species selection trials in South Kalimantan, Indonesia.

Research Goals & Methods

The trees were planted between January 1987 and December 1988 in areas dominated by the exotic grass Imperata cylindrica and weeding was conducted twice a year.

Farm Forestry: An Alternative to Government-Driven Reforestation in the Philippines

Background

This study reviews literature and various case studies about growing trees at the farm level by rural farmers. In the Philippines, millions of dollars have gone to employ people to plant trees as part of reforestation programs while only about 10% of those planted areas are successful. The authors assert that paying people to plant trees is unsustainable and often hindered by the lack of prompt release of funding.

Forest Plantations on Imperata Grasslands in Indonesia: Establishment, Silviculture, and Utilization Potential

background

This dissertation presents results from multiple studies of reforestation on areas dominated by Imperata cylindrica grass in South Kalimantan, Indonesia.

Research Goals & Methods

The author evaluated tree species selection, intra-specific provenance selection, site preparation, fertilization, and ground vegetation under plantations.

Effects of fire on the recruitment of rain forest vegetation beneath Pinus caribaea plantations, Sri Lanka

Background

Groundstory fires burn forest understories and can impact advance regeneration, contributing to conversion of forests to fire-sustained grasslands or fernlands. While plantations of fire-tolerant trees have been successfully established on these sites, managing fire in the newly developing understory remains an issue of concern.

Biomass Equations for Tropical Tree Plantations Using Secondary Data from the Philippines

background

This study advances models for biomass estimation of tropical forests using equations verified by sampling in Philippines plantations. Evidence-based, site-specific equations for biomass estimation can avoid the need for frequent destructive sampling.

Potential of Agroforestry and Plantation Systems in Indonesia for Carbon Stocks: an Economic Perspective

background

This article discusses the potential for carbon sequestration services in various agroforestry systems in Indonesia. The systems specifically discussed include shade based coffee (Coffea robusta), fruit based coffee, timber based coffee, rambutan (Nephelium lappaceum), pinang (Areca catechu), mango (Mangifera indica), macang (Mangifera spp), candle nut (Aleurites moluccana), durian (Durio zibethinus), duku (Lansium domesticum), and sengon (Paraserianthes falcataria) systems.

Understory Development in Young Cordia alliodora Plantations

background

This article presents the findings of a study evaluating the biomass and composition of understory plants in 1- and 5- year old plantations at the La Selva Biological Station in Costa Rica.

Reserach Goals & Methods

This study sampled plantations of Cordia alliodora in monoculture plots and in polyculture plots with trees interplanted with monocots (Euterpe macrospadix, Euterpe oleracea, and Heliconia imbricata).
