Background
Latin America has experienced profound migration into tropical lowland regions, resulting in expansive land cover change and cultural change throughout the Amazonia basin. Drawing from studies published in the book Colonización y Destrucción de Bosques en Panama, this article reviews the drivers of these trends, problems and challenges associated with it, and finally potential recommendations for political and administrative solutions. While these trends are common throughout the region, the authors focus on Panama as a case-study.
