Linking forest conservation and food security through agroecology

Background

This chapter, found in Forest Landscape Restoration: Integrated Approaches to Support Effective Implementation, focuses on Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) in the tropics. Specifically, the authors examine agroecology as an integrated approach for both gaining food security and restoring agro-forest landscapes in post-conflict Colombia.

Conclusions & Takeaways

Drawing on the case of Putumayo, Colombia, the authors highlight the ways in which the restoration of ecological, social and political landscapes are highly intertwines and thus ineffective agricultural development initiaitves that negatively effect on connection can cause a multitude of issues. The chapter particular draws attention to the ways that central land policies often undermine traditions and knowledge of local communities. Thus, they encourage FLR approach to incorporate local knowledge, needs, and opportunities in order to ensure economic, social, and ecological success.
