Ecosystem Decay of Amazonian Forest Fragments: A 22-year Investigation

The authors discuss results from the Biological Dynamics of Forest Fragments Project, a long-term study on rainforest fragmentation in Amazonia. The project, which was originally intended to assess the influence of fragmented areas on Amazonia biota, took place in Menus, Brazil. This report surveyed 340 publications and theses that were produced over the 22 years of the project.

This paper reiviews the main biotic and abiotic factors that influence patterns of secondary forest succession in the Neotropics after complete forest clearance due to human activities.

The authors look at patterns of species replacement and various processes that occur during succession and suggest that the sequence of processes may be predictable even if species composition is not.

Managing Forest Remnants and Forest Gardens in Peru and Indonesia

This chapter describes the forest management of flooded vareza of the Amazon forest in the Napo-Amazon floodplain in Peru. The area is rarely cultivated intensively due to flooding, but human populations have always been higher in this region than in upland forest areas of the Amazon. Some of the most important forest areas are known as capinurales, home to the capinuri tree (Maquira coriaceae), which is harvested for wood and resin. Inga spp. and Rheedia spp. (carichuelo) are collected for fruit.

Antecedentes

Desde 1860, la reforestación en la Sierra Peruana se realizó principalmente con Eucalipto, cambiando a Pinus radiata durante las décadas de 1950-1970. La necesidad de reforestar tierras mas elevadas, despertó el interés por la propagación y uso de especies forestales nativas las cuales se encuentran mejor adaptadas a estas condiciones y presentan diversos usos y beneficios.
