Drivers of Reforestation in Human-Dominated Forests

background

The country of Nepal is examined as a case study for forest cover change, as it has experienced a shift towards an increase in forest cover in recent years. This study examines forests across Nepal in order to provide a framework of social factors useful for understanding this trend.

research goals & Methods

A dataset of 55 forests from the middle hills and Terai plains of Nepal was examined for factors influencing forest cover change.

Du suivi à l’évaluation: à la recherche d’indicateurs opérationnels en écologie de la restauration (From monitoring to evaluation: in search of operational indicators in restoration ecology)

The authors shed light on issues related to monitoring and evaluation of wetland restoration projects. They note that monitoring and evaluation oftentimes lack enough support to be effective. One suggestion the authors put forth is the notion that monitoring/evaluation should be a discipline in its own right if we are to have successful restoration projects in the future.

Restauration écologique: contexte, contraintes et indicateurs de suivi (Ecological restoration: context, constraints and indicators for monitoring)

The authors provide a review of the literature on ecological restoration. Most imprtantly, the authors focus on the importance of indicators in ecological restoration projects.

A Guide to the Restoration Opportunities Assessment Methodology (ROAM)

Background

This guide presents an introduction to Restoration Opportunities Assessment Methodology (ROAM), a tool for countries to evaluate areas for restauration of forest landscapes and identify priority areas. It provides steps for forest land restoration (FLR) preparation and planning, data collection, analysis of results, policy recommendations and implementation.

Changing gears during succession: shifting functional strategies in young tropical secondary forests

Background

Adaptations toresource availability strongly shape patterns of community composition along successional gradients in environmental conditions. This study examines the extent to which variation in functional composition explains shifts in trait-based functional strategies in young tropical secondary forests during the most dynamic stage of succession (0–20 years).

A sustainability framework for assessing trade-offs in ecosystem services

Background

This report presents an analytical framework for achieving sustainability through the lens of ecosystem services.

Conclusions & takeaways

The report integrates both ecological and economic thinking to understand the dynamics of ecosystem services and human needs. A set of contrasting scenarios is presented as a way of illustrating both the pathways and the hurdles towards progress in sustainability. This report is intended to blend the disciplines of economics and ecology as a method for reaching wider audiences.

Mitigation Needs Adaptation: Tropical Forestry and Climate Change

background

This paper examines how tropical forestry practices can contribute to maintaining and enhancing the ability of forests to adapt to global climate change. It considers challenges and opportunities for the integration of tropical forest management in broader methods of adaptation to climate change.

Parcs agroforestiers sahéliens: de la conservation à l’aménagement (Agroforestry parks of the Sahel: from conservation to management)

The authors describe the history of farmer managed wooded parklands in northern Cameroon. They note that a counter-productive ban on cutting from 1950-1990 provided a disinsentive for farmers to care for and plant young trees. Finally, the authors argue for implementation of farmer managed agroforestry parklands where parkland governance is mean to fall on local villages as opposed to local forestry department officers. In doing so, the authors provide suggestions for best practices in managing these wooded parklands for agroforestry.

Pratiques de restauration des zones degradees d’Afrique de l’Est (Restoration practices in degraded landscapes of Eastern Africa)

The author provides an introduction to the state of the land, i.e. extent of degradation in eastern Africa. He then goes on to discuss restoration practices and for degraded landscapes in eastern Africa. The author also provides an evaluation of reforestation practices currently in use. The author ends by reviewing successful technologies for reforestation in eastern Africa and offering suggestions for scaling up.
