Regeneration Pattern and Size-Class Distribution of Indigenous Woody Species in Exotic Plantation in Pugu Forest Reserve, Tanzania

background

This study examines the natural regeneration of indigenous tree species in an exotic tree plantation adjacent to a natural forest in a coastal forest of Tanzania.

Research Goals & Methods

Four dominant indigenous tree species were identified in the exotic plantation with diameter size classes between 10 to 35cm.

Regeneration of Indigenous Trees in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, Uganda

background

This study examines the dominant exotic species, their distribution and effect on the regeneration of indigenous tree species in the formerly encroached area of Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, southwestern Uganda. The 4 habitat types examined were exotic woodlots, old croplands and natural forest habitat.

Research Goals & Methods

Indigenous species diversity was assessed by systematic sampling of the vegetation and soils in transect plots.

Does Forest Restoration using Taungya Foster Tree Species Diversity? The case of Afram Headwaters Forest Reserve in Ghana

background

This study evaluates taungya agroforestry system - a forest restoration effectiveness in promoting high tree diversity-  in Ghana. This study was conducted in a forest reserve buffered by Teak and Cedrella-taungya on logged, cropped and burned land.

Indigenous Woody Species Diversity in Eucalyptus globulus Labill spp. globulus Plantations in the Ethiopian Highlands

background

This study evaluates the regeneration of native woody species in eucalyptus plantations in the central highlands of Ethiopia.

Research Goals & Methods

Understory trees and shrubs were identified and measured in 11 year old plantations at Chancho where no natural forests remain, and in 37 year old plantations at Menagesha where remnant natural forests exist.

Applied Nucleation as a Forest Restoration Strategy

background

To combat deforestation and restore forest cover quickly and efficiently, this article proposes the use of applied nucleation as a restoration strategy. The article reviews research to date on applied nucleation, which is a method for restoring degraded landscapes in which small clusters of shrubs and trees are planted to encourage natural forest regeneration.

Rehabilitation of Degraded Tropical Forest Lands

background

This article discusses the options for the rehabilitation of degraded land on high rainfall areas. It suggests that it is both environmentally and economically disadvantageous to let the degraded land remain in an unproductive and rapidly eroding state.

Restoration of a Sri-Lankan rainforest: Using Caribbean Pine Pinus caribaea as a nurse for establishing late-successional tree species

Background

In the moist tropics, studies have demonstrated poor seedling establishment of late-successional trees on lands cleared of forest. This study examines the potential for establishing late-successional tree species that dominate the canopy of rainforest by planting within and adjacent to experimental openings that were created within a Pinus caribaea plantation.

Optimising Seedling Management: Pouteria sapota, Diospyros digyna, and Cedrela odorata in a Mexican Rainforest

background

This study compares the height growth of three native tree species (Pouteria sapota, Diospyros digyna, and Cedrela odorata) during the first two years after transplantation from a nursery in three plot types (primary rainforest, secondary forest, and open pasture) in Veracruz, Mexico.

Research Goals & Methods

The effects of canopy closure, leaf nutrients, initial seedling height and seed mass on the final height of the plant after two years were analyzed.
