Opportunities and Challenges for Ecological Restoration within REDD+

background

This article discusses the possibilities for the inclusion of restoration as part of REDD+ (Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation) as well as  benefits for biodiversity and income for communities.

Mycorrhizal Interactions for Reforestation: Constraints to Dryland Agroforest in Brazil

background

The authors conducted a review of literature on mycohorrizae in tropical dry forest systems. Their objective was to understand the role that reforestation and mycohorrizae play in providing ecosystem services such as carbon sequestration and flood control.

Research Goals & Methods

Few studies describe the role of mycohorrizae in tropical dry forest; this study seeks to fill that gap.

Successional Change and Resilience of a Very Dry Tropical Deciduous Forest Following Shifting Agriculture

Background

Given substaintial conversion of very dry tropical deciduous forests in Mexico to agricultural and other land uses, this study examines forest succession over time in such ecosystems. The study was conducted near Nizanda, Oaxaca, Mexico with 26°C average temperatures and 900 mm average rainfall.

Environmental Drivers in Mangrove Establishment and Early Development: A review

background

This study reviews literature on the environmental conditions that influence the establishment and early growth of mangroves.

Research Goals & Methods

Different species grow in areas with different flooding regimes. The authors used the classification of "inundation by all high tides, inundation by medium high tides, inundation by normal high tides, inundation by spring tides, and occasional inundation by exceptional or equinoctial tides."

Influence of species richness and environmental context on early survival of replanted mangroves at Gazi bay, Kenya

Background

Mangrove restoration is often unsuccessful, thus this study involves long-term large-scale experiments measuring a range of ecosystem functions in replanted mangrove stands in Ghazi in Kenya funded by Earthwatch.

Colonization of Non-Planted Mangrove Species into Restored Mangrove Stands in Gazi Bay, Kenya

Background

As mangroves are being recognized as some of the world’s most productive ecosystems, restoration efforts are being undertaken around the world. Not all projects are successful, however. This study will potentially help mangrove restoration practitioners with species selection.

Los hongos micorrízicos arbusculares y su implicación en la producción y manejo de especies neotropicales forestales, con énfasis en meliáceas (Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and its use in the production and management of neotropical forest)

Español

Antecedentes

Recovery of Plant Species Richness and Composition in Abandoned Forest Settlement Area in Kenya

background

This paper examines natural regeneration of tree species in a former forest village settlement that had been cultivated and abandoned in Mau forest, Kenya. Following 19 years of abandonment, the site consists of 3 zones of recovery due to different degrees of degradation before abandonment, continued grazing, selective logging and firewood collection. The zones are grass zone (GZ), transition zone I (TZ I) and TZ II and secondary forests (SF).
