Fire Control as a Simple Means of Promoting Tropical Forest Restoration

background

This study investigates whether or not fire exclusion allows grasslands to regenerate to forest in a timeframe suitable for reforestation efforts. The researchers compare tree species richness, dbh, diameter at ground height (DGH), and total woody biomass accumulation in 2 plots that have been protected from fire. They measure the size and amount of above ground biomass in plots that have been protected from fire for 12 and 32 years respectively in Kibale National Park, Uganda.

Are Mangroves Worth Replanting? The Direct Economic Benefits of a Community-Based Reforestation Project

background

This study examines the socioeconomic impacts of a community-led reforestation project in the Philippines through a survey of the local fishers over 10 years after replanting. And Yet It Moves: Success Stories and Drivers of CDM Projects in Sub-Saharan Africa (UNEP)

background

This report by the UNEP reviews CDM (Clean Development Mechanism of the Kyoto Protocol) projects in Africa. CDM projects allow polluting countries to offset their carbon emissions by financing clean development projects such as clean energy and efficiency, emissions capture, and reforestation in developing countries. This study examines CDM projects in Africa and includes a reforestation project in the DR Congo.

Indigenous Trees in West African Forest Plantations: The Need for Domestication by Clonal Techniques

background

This study evaluates native species tree plantations across West Africa by summarizing existing information on the yield of those plantations, with particular focus on the Cameroon Forest Management and Regeneration Project. It considers the potential for vegetative propagation and clonal selection to increase growth rates and marketability of native species.
