An overview of theory, rationale, and techniques for restoration and reforestation of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest.

The chapters covered the following subjects: An explanation of the evolution of restoration techniques and methodologies as the practice of restoration has become more sophisticated; Environmental diagnostics of areas to be restored; Monitoring of areas as a tool to evaluate effectiveness of methodologies; Quantification and monitoring of biomass and carbon in planted areas; Restoration methods for economic benefits; and Description of operational actions for restoration.

Enrichment Planting of Bertholletia excelsa in Secondary Forest in the Bolivian Amazon: Effect of Cutting Line Width on Survival, Growth and Crown Traits

Bertholletia excelsa (Brazil nut tree) seedlings were planted as enrichment plantings under a variety of different treatments in the El Tigre reserve in the northern Bolivian Amazon.

Research Goals & Methods

Survival and growth were measured for five treatments: cutting lines of 2,4, and 6 m wide, and treatments with and without the vegetation cleared. Treatments with cleared vegetation produced high survival rates (97% vs. 86.5%), though the variation in line width did not affect survival rates.

Plantaciones forestales con especies nativas: Una alternativa para la producción de madera y la provisión de servicios ambientales (Native species tree plantations: and alternative for wood production and environmental services)

Se presenta un panorama general del desarrollo de las actividades de plantaciones forestales en Costa Rica, así como algunos resultados de ensayos de rehabilitación de áreas degradadas con especies forestales nativas en la Estación Biológica La Selva. Durante 12 años, se midió anualmente el crecimiento y la producción de biomasa aérea de doce especies nativas en rodales mixtos y puros, como asi también la fertilidad del suelo bajo plantaciones puras de cuatro especies forestales nativas. La mezcla de especies mostro la mayor productividad volumétrica, estadísticamente superior a las especies en plantaciones puras.

Growth of dipterocarp seedlings in artificial gaps: An experiment in a logged-over rainforest in South Kalimantan, Indonesia

Background

Regeneration of dipterocarps following logging has become a crucial issue in tropical forest management. Secondary forest frequently and rapidly replaces dipterocarps in large logged-over patches. If unmanaged, these secondary forest patches are often composed of unmerchantable early-succession species. It has been hypothesized that dipterocarps grow most successfully in small gaps.
