Environmental Drivers in Mangrove Establishment and Early Development: A reviewbackgroundThis study reviews literature on the environmental conditions that influence the establishment and early growth of mangroves. Research Goals & MethodsDifferent species grow in areas with different flooding regimes. The authors used the classification of "inundation by all high tides, inundation by medium high tides, inundation by normal high tides, inundation by spring tides, and occasional inundation by exceptional or equinoctial tides." Impacts of Early- and Late-seral Mycorrhizae during Restoration in Seasonal Tropical Forest, MexicobackgroundThis study examines the degree to which arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are associated with early vs. late successional forests in Quintana Roo, Mexico. It considers how such fungi aid seedling growth of six native early-, mid- or late-successional tree species. The researchers hypothesize that the application of mycorrizae associated with a tree species' associated successional sere will better promote that species' seedling growth and that associated AMF are therefore key for forest restoration success in degraded or disturbed areas. Desarrollo del dosel de leguminosas bajo diversas condiciones de restauración ecológica en bosque de pino – encino de Michoacán, México (Legume canopy development under various conditions of ecological restoration in pine-oak forests of Michoacan, Mexico)Englishresearch goals & methodsThe work aims to evaluate the establishment of Lupinus elegans, Crotalaria pumila and Trifolium repens under pine-oak for their use in restoration strategies, to reconvert abandoned agricultural land into productive forests. The study also evaluates its potential use for restoring areas disturbed by deposition of volcanic ash in the indigenous community of Nuevo San Juan Parangaricutiro, Michoacán. Effect of Nursery Practices on Seedling Survival and Growth of Selected Miombo Tree Species, Morogoro, TanzaniabackgroundThis study investigates the effects of shade, polythene tube diameter and height, and soil mixtures on seedling survival and growth of five Miombo tree species in Morogoro, Tanzania. Research Goals & MethodsFor each species, two nursery experiments were carried out. That is a) degree of shading, pot diameter and height trial, which adopted a split-split plot design with three replications and b) nursery soil mixtures adopted a completely randomized block design with three replications. Open access copy available |
